Our sign 50 yards from the house, the Blue Ridge Parkway 850 feet away and or our little cabins just down the hill all vanish into a gray haze that can last for hours to days.ĭespite the wind and fog, there are advantages to our perch on the edge of the Blue Ridge Plateau. Feeling is all you have because you can’t see. Fog that can be so dense you feel its weight pressing on you. The wind drives the cold like knives through every layer of clothing and any crack in the house. In the fall, the wind carries strains of cold that encourage people to bundle up and take in the fall colors. ![]() In the spring and summer, it carries the cooler breezes that draw people to the mountains to escape the heat and humidity at the lower elevations. ![]() It wails and sings, rattling houses, cabins and campers. Sun-protective clothing, a long-sleeved shirt and pants, a wide-brimmed hat, and UVA and UVB-blocking sunglasses are particularly helpful in blocking UV radiation's harmful effects.As I lay in bed listening to the wind whip around the house on our campground, I remembered reading in The Blue Ridge Parkway by Foot, A Park Ranger's Memoir by Tim Pegram the line: “the wind blows through Fancy Gap when it blows nowhere else on the earth.” Actually, I thought, the wind doesn’t just blow through Fancy Gap, Virginia.
